Time for confessions
Released in 2014, this film tells the story of François Bizot, an expatriate working at the English School of Asian Studies in 1975. He lives near Siem Reap at the time when the Khmer Rouge take control of Cambodia. The film focuses almost exclusively on his encounter with Douch, one of the most notorious Khmer Rouge torturers, and on the bond that develops between them. The film was mainly shot in Battambang, offering a glimpse of the city’s remaining colonial heritage.
The Beach
Definitely a must-see! And for several reasons: to admire Leonardo DiCaprio’s beauty, as well as the sublime landscapes of Thailand. The Beach tells the story of a young American in search of a secret community established on a paradise island in Thailand. We are plunged straight into the heart of bustling Bangkok, but also into some of the country’s most beautiful islands! As a fun fact, the waterfall Leonardo dives into in the film is actually located in Khao Yai National Park, in the east of the country.
Rangoon
A film released in 1995, dealing with the military dictatorship of former Burma, and more specifically with the demonstrations that broke out in the country in 1988. It is an American film whose main character is a tourist stranded in Myanmar after losing her passport. It offers a good introduction to the country’s turbulent history, which, little by little, is moving towards calm and peace.
The Bridge on the River Kwai
A masterpiece with 7 Oscars that needs no introduction! This film brilliantly recounts the true story of the construction of a railway line linking Thailand and Burma, under the orders of the Japanese army. This tragically legendary line saw thousands of prisoners of war perish during its construction. Today, you can see the remains in the province of Kanchanaburi, in western Thailand, and learn more at the War Remnants Museum, which houses a collection of everyday objects from that era.
